National Honor Society was started in 1921, by a man named Edward Rynearson. He was also the first president of the National Honor Society. The NASSP, National Association of Secondary-School Principles, wanted to create an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy.
To become a member of NHS, the student needs to have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.3. He/she must also fill out a sheet verifying all activities they have been involved in and out of school, leadership positions they have held, jobs they have had, and awards they have been given. They also need to write an essay on what Character, Scholorship, Leadership, or Service means to them personally, A faculty committee of five teachers select the prospective members, and new members are inducted in the spring. Membership is both an honor and a commitment.
The National Honor Society Pledge:
I pledge myself to uphold
The high purposes of the National Honor Society.
I pledge to maintain high scholastic standing,
To hold as fundamental and worthy an untarnished character,
To endeavor intelligently and courageously to be a positive leader,
And to give of myself freely in service to others.
By word and deed, I shall demonstrate
That I value being a member of the National Honor Society.
